Hail in the carolina's

With 139 hailstorms from 2012 - 2021, North Carolina ranks 12th  on the list of states with the most number of hail storms. South Carolina comes in at number 5 , with 302 hailstorms Property damage  for each state during that same period was 126.1 million (7th highest) and 10.8 million ( 26th lowest), respectively.

Mothball =                           1 inch                                                                                                                       

Penny =                            3/4 inch

Nichel =                            7/8 inch

Quarter =                             1 inch           ( hail quarter size or larger is considered severe)

Ping-Pong Ball =     1 1/2 inches

Golf Ball =                  1 3/4 inches   

Tennis Ball =             2 1/2 inches   

Baseball =                  2 3/4 inches

Tea Cup =.                           3 inches

Softball =                             4 inches

Grapefruit =             4 1/2 inches




Threshold of Hail Size to cause damage

Light Asphalt Shingles (3 tab).                                                                                                                                     1 in

Hail Damage to Materials

There are two types of hail damage to building materials:

            1)      Functional

             2)    Non-functional




1) The water-shedding ability of the material  has been compromised (fractures, punctures,tears the reinforced mat )

2) The expected service life of the material has been compromised. Excessive amount of aggregate in gutters is a strong indication of hail damage.


Another way hail can damage a material  can be found on metal roof panels , gutters , furnace pipes protruding thru the roof deck. Although  not functional,
