2) Non-functional
1) The water-shedding ability of the material has been compromised (fractures, punctures,tears the reinforced mat )
2) The expected service life of the material has been compromised. Excessive amount of aggregate in gutters is a strong indication of hail damage.
Another way hail can damage a material can be found on metal roof panels , gutters , furnace pipes protruding thru the roof deck. Although not functional,
